Our current abortion law in Tennessee is known as the “Human Life Protection Act“. It was passed in 2019 as a “trigger law” should Roe v. Wade ever be overturned. Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Dobbs decision on June 24, 2022 and our trigger law took effect thirty days after the reversal. This act made it a Class C felony for a medical doctor to fulfill a pregnant woman’s request to murder her child in her womb. However, the law did not make it a felony or even illegal for a pregnant woman to murder her own child(ren) in the womb. In fact, our Human Life Protection Act states specifically in Section 2(a)(1) that a woman can use “any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance or device with intent to terminate the pregnancy” legally until the moment of birth in Tennessee. Yes, you read that correctly, here in Tennessee it is legal for a mother to murder her child until birth.
We at Abolish Abortion TN believe this is a violation of God’s law which commands “thou shall not murder” as well as the Constitution of the United States which affords all US citizens the right to life as well as equal protection under the 14th amendment. Unfortunately, our Governor along with the pro-life establishment here in Tennessee (including TN Right to Life), do not believe that our neighbors in the womb deserve equal protection of laws or equal justice. Based on their actions and legislation they support, they believe the laws that protect you and I from being murdered in Tennessee should not apply to our neighbors in the womb. They have proven time and time again that they believe Tennessee’s homicide laws should only protect born individuals and not those in the womb. This is sinful partiality which God hates.
