In 2021, before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, approximately 11,611 Tennesseans were murdered via abortion, including abortions obtained both in Tennessee and in other states. In a report published earlier this week, JAMA Network Open estimated that in 2025, 15,420 Tennesseans were murdered via abortion.

Why the increase? Isn’t abortion “banned” in Tennessee?

Hardly.

Because of the hard work of organizations like Tennessee Right to Life and the politicians they endorse, Tennessee’s Human Life Protection Act (aka the trigger bill) grants pregnant mothers legal immunity to murder their children in the womb using “any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance” until birth.

The pro-life establishment in Tennessee claims our current law must remain in place because they “saves lives,” but the numbers prove that is simply not the case. During the last legislative session, Representative Jody Barrett filed HB 570 that would have removed maternal immunity for prenatal homicide, but our pro-life supermajority refused to hear or discuss the bill. As a result, thousands of Tennesseans continue will continue to be murdered each year.

The Bible is clear that laws granting immunity for murder are an abomination in the sight of God, and His judgment will continue to rain down on our state for the wickedness our current law perpetuates (Deuteronomy 1:17; Proverbs 20:10). Rising abortion numbers are the natural result of Ecclesiastes 8:11, and our current law only continues to harden hearts and teach our culture that abortion the murder of a child in the womb is not a murder worthy of punishment.
